It is a truth universally acknowledged that at any given moment in time, Friends will be on on at least one UK TV channel. But what I hadn’t realised until yesterday was that watching Friends is an (albeit safe and cosy) lesson in the non-linear nature of time.
Flick on the TV (E4 is usually a safe bet) one day, and you’ll see Chandler and Monica about to get married. The next day, they’re not even going out. The next day, Monica has that boyfriend with a moustache – the one who was in Three Men and a Baby. You can jump back and forward in time, and things change, and nothing really changes. Someone usually has a boyfriend, someone else has a baby, someone else is hiding from someone else behind the sofa, and there’s a duck involved somehow.
